NAMI Family-to-Family Educational Course (Week 1 of 6)
If someone you love is living with mental illness, YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
One in five families has a loved one who’s been diagnosed with a psychiatric illness. Like any other chronic illness, these affect not only the person with the diagnosis, but the entire family. NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness. NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program is a free, confidential, twelve session course for family, significant others and friends of people living with mental illness. The comprehensive course is taught by trained NAMI members with lived experience and offers education and support, teaching knowledge and skills that help families cope more effectively.
NAMI Family-to-Family is designed to facilitate a better understanding of mental illness, to increase coping skills and empower participants to become advocates for their loved ones. Presentations, discussion and interactive exercises take place in agroup setting to provide mutual support and shared positive impact. You will learn about managing crises, solving problems and communicating effectively. Discover how to take care of yourself and manage stress, find out about local supports and services, up-to-date information on mental health conditions (Schizophrenia, Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, PTSD and Dual diagnosis) and how they affect the brain.
Participants will learn about current treatments, evidence-based therapies, medication and side effects. Family-to-Family has been taught nationwide to hundreds of thousands of family members. People find it to be life changing.
