Frontline Paper Workshop
Frontline Paper workshop , formerly known as Combat Paper NJ IS Facilitated by Veteran Artist Walt Nygard. Frontline Paper is a veteran’s art project Where, in open Workshops veterans
gather and while sharing their stories engage in the transformative and often cathartic process of making handmade paper from U.S. military uniforms. The first step of this process is to
DECONSTRUCT the uniform by cutting it down to postage stamp sized pieces. Using traditional papermaking practices and equipment, these pieces are beaten into pulp, pulled into formed
sheets, pressed and dried. We RECLAIM the uniform as handmade paper. While participants may not identify as artists, every veteran has a story. Frontline Paper provides the perfect vehicle
to COMMUNICATE our stories. Through instruction and collaboration, veterans use printmaking, drawing or painting or the written word to tell their stories. Each sheet of Frontline Paper is
unique. And each piece of work gives voice to a veteran and sparks a dialogue of the raw realities of what it means to serve in the U.S. military. We welcome veterans of all branches and eras
to share with us their stories and become part of a community of men and women who have trod different, yet common, ground. As we transform these uniforms, so we transform ourselves. We
take our place, as veterans and artists, in the creative life of our country.
