Foundations of Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Length of Training: Six and half (6.5) hours

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative conversation style to strengthen a person’s own motivation and commitment to change. It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion.

By the end of this training, the learner will:

  • Describe MI and the four processes
  • Discuss Spirit of MI
  • Understand MI core skills (OARS)
  • Recognize change talk and how to respond to change talk
  • Understand how to deal with resistance
  • Understand how to apply “Ask-tell-ask” during patient interactions
